Safe and Gentle Sedation Dentistry

Prioritizing your child’s comfort and peace of mind during every dental procedure.

Compassionate Care for Every Child

Understanding Your Child’s Needs

We understand that some children feel extra nervous about dental visits, while others may have sensory sensitivities or require extensive treatment that is difficult to sit through. Our sedation options are designed to bridge the gap between anxiety and a successful appointment.

Our highly trained team take the time to evaluate your child’s medical history and temperament to recommend the mildest, safest level of sedation necessary to ensure a positive, tear-free experience.

Sedation Options: Tailored Solutions for Comfort & Safety

Nitrous Oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is a mild sedative that children breathe in to help them relax while remaining fully awake. It wears off almost instantly after we administer 100% oxygen once the treatment is complete.

For children who require more support, we offer Oral Conscious Sedation. This option creates a relaxed, drowsy state where the patient stays awake but may fall asleep or have little to no memory of the appointment. This method is particularly suitable for children with high dental anxiety, low pain thresholds, or sensitive gag reflexes, enabling us to perform more complex procedures effectively.

Our primary goal is to provide a calm experience, allowing your child to receive the quality dental care they deserve without the stress of anxiety.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is a safe and well-monitored method that can make dental treatment more comfortable and less stressful for children. While it may not be suitable for every situation, it can be particularly beneficial for kids who experience fear, have sensory issues, or require complex procedures. This approach often allows for treatment to be completed in a single visit.

This procedure is administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist (Ambulatory Anesthesia and Associates-AAA), ensuring that each child remains relaxed and asleep while maintaining their ability to breathe independently. The administration of IV sedation takes place within our dental facility, providing a controlled and professional environment while monitoring our pediatric patients.

Hospital & Surgical Center

Hospital treatment for pediatric dentistry offers specialized, comprehensive dental care under general anesthesia in a hospital or surgical center. This approach ensures safety and comfort for children with extensive decay, severe dental anxiety, or complex special healthcare needs. It often allows multiple procedures to be completed in a single, controlled, and monitored environment. This care is currently provided at Prime Health at Richland Hospital.

Your Child’s Safety is Our Priority

When it comes to sedation, safety is our absolute non-negotiable. Our doctors follow the strict guidelines set by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and our office is equipped with advanced monitoring technology to track your child’s vitals throughout their entire visit.

We provide clear, written instructions before and after the appointment so you know exactly how to care for your child as they recover. You can rest easy knowing your little one is in the hands of a team that treats them like their own family.

What to Expect During Your Child's Sedation Visit

Guide to a Calm and Safe Appointment

We want you to feel completely informed about the process so you can provide calm support for your child. Here’s how we ensure a smooth experience from start to finish with Oral Conscious Sedation, IV Sedation, Hospital, or Surgical Center procedures:

  • Pre-Appointment Preparation: Before the visit, we will provide specific guidelines regarding food and drink. It is important to follow these instructions closely to ensure the sedation is as safe and effective as possible.

  • The Arrival: When you arrive, our team will review your child’s health history one last time and check their vitals. We’ll explain the process to your child in a gentle, age-appropriate way to keep them feeling brave.

  • During the Procedure: Whether using nitrous oxide or oral sedation, we monitor your child’s oxygen levels and heart rate throughout the entire visit. Our clinical staff stay by their side, providing a soothing environment while performing the necessary dental work.

  • Recovery & Observation: Once the treatment is complete, your child will rest in our recovery area until the sedative begins to wear off. We will monitor them until they are ready to head home and provide you with a detailed aftercare sheet.

  • Rest at Home: For the remainder of the day, your child should enjoy some “couch time” with their favorite movie. Most children return to their normal, bouncy selves by the following morning!

Sedation FAQ for Parents

What is sedation dentistry for children?

Sedation dentistry for children is a great way to help them feel more relaxed during their visits to the dentist. Pediatric dentists use special medication that makes kids feel calm and, sometimes, even helps them take a little nap. This means they can have a much more pleasant experience while getting the care they need. Everyone loves leaving the dentist with a smile!

Sedation dentistry is considered a safe and effective option for children when performed by skilled pediatric dentists or experienced anesthesia providers. These professionals closely monitor your child throughout the procedure to ensure their well-being. The medications used are thoughtfully selected based on your child’s age, weight, and specific needs. Before recommending or administering sedation, our dental team conducts a comprehensive evaluation of your child’s medical history and discusses any potential risks or side effects. You can be assured that we prioritize your child’s safety and comfort at every step.

Sedation dentistry offers several benefits for children who experience dental anxiety or struggle to remain still during dental treatments. These advantages include reduced fear and anxiety, improved cooperation and relaxation, increased comfort during procedures, and an overall positive dental experience for the child.
